EasyPlug, The Next BC Tech Success?
Recently, upon the recommendation of my mentor who helped me develop my marketing career, I was given the opportunity to give back to the Tech community by mentoring a group of my own. The company is called EasyPlug, an innovative team that is in the running for the $100,000 prize at the New Ventures BC competition. My mentor has always been a calm, supportive advisor who helped me realize some of the shortcomings and encouraged me to build my network. I hope I can do the same for EasyPlug – if anyone is interested in further information on Easyplug, feel free to contact me.
The problem
A trailing power cord can be hazardous. Visualize yourself, in the living room, ironing a shirt while your son is running rampant through your home. It does not take too much imagination to predict a negative outcome if your child trips over the power cable and the iron were to fall... Seniors homes and construction areas are also prime power cord accident zones, and EasyPlug has a potential solution.
The idea
The concept is an innovative, magnetic adaptor for electrical plugs. The adaptor reduces risk by protecting home and commercial environments from tripping and electrical hazards.
The product
By employing a two piece magnetic adapter that prevents injury and protects wired equipment, you can mitigate home and workplace accidents. One piece attaches to the electrical cord while the other piece plugs into a wall socket. The two pieces are held together magnetically, allowing the metal contacts to provide power to the device.
Goals
The company is seeking $250,000 for product development, CSA approval and small batch manufacturing.
Past recognition
Easyplug has been awarded $10,000 at the Enterprise National Finals, which includes an opportunity to present to Vancouver’s Angel Investor forum. They also won $5000 at TieQuest Toronto’s New Entrepreneur 2009. Both of these steps have led the group to earn a spot in the top 30 for the coveted BC New Ventures competition, where they hope to make the top 10 cut in August. The number 1 team will earn $100,000 in capital towards their business.
