Infrared LED’s for Digital Motion Capture Cameras
In the second half of 2012 we designed two IR LED boards for digital motion capture cameras used in games, television, and film production.
The first is for a camera with 100mm diameter round aperture. It was designed to run off of 5V power supply and draws 3.4A.
The second is for cameras with 30mm square aperture. It was designed to run off of 12V battery and draws about 1.2A.
Both models produce a 120° light cone as they both use the same base IR LED.
These LED’s emit brightly in infrared which is visible to most digital cameras, but only appear very faint red to the naked eye. This allows the camera to focus on the ping-pong balls worn by motion capture artists in an otherwise darkened studio.
Only a few of these have been manufactured due to the specialized application.
